Santa Rita Ranch, owned by Jeff and Linda Mannix, encompasses the headquarters operation twelve miles south of Durango on the Animas River and summer pastures in the San Juan Mountains north and east of town.

Santa Rita’s herd of Texas Longhorn cows spend the fall and winter at the home ranch, where they graze organic grasses grown for them over the summer. During the snowy winter, locally grown hay is fed until the grass begins to grow again in spring. Cows calve at the home ranch beginning in March of each year. Longhorn cows are noted for calving ease, and the newborn calves are famous for their heartiness and vigor. These are essential genetic attributes generally, but especially critical in the Rocky Mountains where temperatures can reach thirty degrees below zero in the winter and snow even as late as April.

Santa Rita Texas Longhorns are purebred, true-to-type and registered with the Cattlemen’s Texas Longhorn Registry (CTLR), the only association of Longhorn breeders that blood types cattle to assure purity. Only with purebred Texas Longhorn cattle can we assure beef quality that consistently out-grades all other breeds, and raise calves that require no veterinary attention or shots of any kind.

Santa Rita Texas Longhorn cows and bulls, and the steers we raise for market, have all been bred on the ranch. None have been purchased. Santa Rita beef is sold at the Ranch, as well as the Durango Farmer’s Market, now in its twelfth year, and to a loyal following who come to the ranch to see the cows and pick up their beef. Santa Rita beef is also featured at the Glacier Club at Tamarrron Resort, the Ore House, and Steamworks Brewpub.

Besides the cattle operation, Jeff and Linda provide a variety of other services including Personal Protection Handgun Classes, All Natural Beef Sales, natural horsemanship, writing and marketing. Explore this website for more details of the unique opportunities offered at Santa Rita Ranch.
